Sharing our stories
through sea shanties
Cast Away Your Cares
Eight women are on a boat. They’re leaving their lives behind, with no real idea of where they’re going. The ocean offers them new possibilities, a gentler rhythm, a clear horizon. But something is weighing them down.
Shame Shanties is a play with music written by Liz Mytton about the ways in which women’s lives are impacted by mental health, shame and how stigma and silence is used to prevent women seeking freedom and greater well being.
Featuring a soundtrack of contemporary folk and working songs with traditional and modern sea shanties written especially for the production, Shame Shanties is a bold exploration into the burdens we carry and the lengths we go to to keep them hidden.
A selection of images and videos from rehearsals, including open rehearsal at Bristol Old Vic, Severn Beach and at Bristol Harbourside.
The video entitled ‘Clementine’s story’ is one of three final monologues we filmed when we realised we would have to postpone the theatre show due to Covid-19.
