Stories from Newby

Newby Square Stories is a digital archive of reminiscences from people who lived and worked in and around the Newby Square area of Bradford.

“I loved my life there. You knew your neighbours and they knew you. They’d pop round for sugar. Everybody was just together… all the kids played… it was like one big happy family. Yes, we did have our ups and downs, there would be arguments and fall outs, but even so, that was still your family.

Alongside the film we produced a website. It documents the history of Newby Square and includes four short films telling stories from former residents.

“It was a good time to grow up in… I’m glad to have been a part of it. I’m a bit disappointed that it didn’t carry on, that we didn’t keep the bonds, but I’m so glad I didn’t miss it. What I’d say to the youth now, about what Newby Square was… it was a black movement… it was a time of learning.”
