CALL OUT FOR CHORUS
‘We are still Asafo’ is our new show inspired by the experiences of the African diaspora, in West Africa, the Caribbean and UK. Borrowing from Ghanaian flag making traditions and ritual, the show pays tribute to the journeys of our communities and the ancestral connections we share — and how these links may help us in these troubled times.
We are looking for a chorus, who can narrate, sing in harmony and use movement to support the story of our 3 main characters. The chorus will need to be dynamic, but in tune with each other, narrating the story as an ensemble.
To apply, please send us a video (not more than 3 mins in total), answering the following points:
What does ‘ancestors’ mean to you?
A reading of a short piece of text — see below
A recording of you singing a song you love, WITHOUT a backing track
The purpose of these submissions is to get to know you a little, so there are no trick questions and no right way to do it. While creating the show, we have been listening to lots of musical inspiration, including Sweet Honey In the Rock, Richard Bona, Baraka, some choirs and groups. Please click the links (underlined) and have a listen if you have time.
We want to encourage a broad range of submissions, and welcome applications from people of all ages (18+) and physical abilities. Applicants must be able to travel to Bradford for rehearsals as travel expenses are included in the rehearsal fees.
Short text for video reading
This is a tale of a hopeful trio
Partnered in mission, connected by fate,
Committed to purpose, transcending their egos
To fulfil their calling before it’s too late
Over there is the Watcher, who dwells all alone
In Jamaica’s lush mountains, a son of the soil
With birds and with flowers he’s made his own home
Resisting the pain of the modern world’s toil
And yet in his wisdom, a chink has appeared
To disturb the peace of his tropical base
A window was opened, and entered the weird
And wonderful world of the Tik Toker space
