‘We are still Asafo’ Research & Development

R & D — No. 1
Bradford, April 2024

We gathered as a small creative team to explore some early ideas about how we could use music, dance and flags to tell stories of displacement and migration.

The video below right (20 second clip) gives a flavour of some of the work we did.

Images taken from the week.

R & D — No.2
Ghana, October 2024

It was important for us to visit with Asafo flag making communitities on the Cape Coast of Ghana, to seek permission and support for our theatre making plans. We were conscious of cultural appropriation and wanted to have clear boundaries about how we might use our learning respectfully. We met with chiefs, vendors at Kantomanto market (one of the world's biggest second-hand markets), attended flag festivals, met with the British Council in Accra and went to a performing arts conference at the National Theatre of Ghana.
